Nutrition and Functional Medicine
Rebecca Wakefield
Registered Nutritionist
Hi, I’m Rebecca Wakefield, a registered nutritionist trained in functional medicine. I have a MSc in nutrition science and practice from the university of Middlesex and am trained in Nutrigenomics. My journey and passion for this career started in 2013, when my world was turned upside down. My dad aged 61, a strong no-nonsense farmer went to the doctor complaining of fatigue and shoulder pain. Three months later he died of colon cancer that had metastasised to the liver.
The experience of losing my dad, changed the way I thought about my own health and emphasised the importance of prevention. I was driven to learn as much as possible about nutrition, its role on our health and all the healthcare options available. This period of stress and grief impacted on my health. I started to experience extremely heavy, painful periods which led to iron deficiency anaemia and fatigue. I discovered my thyroid was underactive and I had gut dysbiosis. These were the root causes of my symptoms. Working with a nutritional therapist, it took me roughly six months to support my gut health and optimise my thyroid function, as a result my other symptoms improved, and my energy increased.
I am passionate about women’s health and empowering women to make informed choices about their health and nutrition. Too many women have their symptoms dismissed as normal or are given synthetic hormones to mask the underlying causes. I believe one of the reasons why women are not taken seriously early enough is because in my experience, women can endure incredible stress in their lives and just find ways to carry on.
Just because our symptoms are COMMON it does not make them NORMAL.
Behind the scenes I’m a chocolate eating, prosecco loving mum of three, dog owner, goose keeper, netball player and fan of hot yoga. I can relate to many symptoms experienced by women because of my own health journey and understand the challenges for women trying to implement changes that benefit their health whilst juggling family, work, and other commitments. Unfortunately, too many women go about their lives inhibited by ongoing symptoms that worsen over time before they find the right support to make changes in their lives. I can offer that support.
