BOOK REVIEW: MENOPOCALYPSE - Kate
Oct 03, 2022Kate, a Pause & Unite follower, Shares her thoughts after reading this book.....
Menopocalypse breaks down menopause in an easy-to-understand way and shares science-based diet and lifestyle recommendations that feel achievable.
Amanda has a no-nonsense approach and tells it like it is, having gone through this journey herself.
As a Personal Trainer for over twenty years, there is not surprisingly a comprehensive section based on movement in menopause which I recommend to anyone looking to change their approach to exercise.
I was peri menopausal when I started reading this book, 50 years old and lacking in knowledge about what was happening to me and will happen to 50% of the population.
The part of the book that I found particularly helpful is Amanda’s holistic view to managing menopause – she breaks it down into 4 key areas that she calls ‘hacks’ :
- How to eat
- How to move
- How to manage stress
- How to shift your thinking
There wasn’t anything in the book I struggled with personally, although perhaps seeing photos of resistance training exercises with descriptive steps of how to do them could prove tricky for someone who has never done any strength training at all before. They may find video format easier to follow, or a trainer in real life. However, they are well written and easy to follow.
I read this book at the start of my own research into menopause and it prompted me to delve a lot deeper. I was struggling at the time with peri-menopausal symptoms such as night sweats, extreme mood swings, non-existent libido, memory loss and brain fog. The book made me realise I needed to look at my stress management and sleep besides the exercise and nutrition which I already had a good handle on.
I love this line from the book;
‘Change doesn't always come easily. You cannot continue to keep doing the same things and expect change to occur’
Because we do need to really think about what needs to change at this life stage – and that can be a hugely positive thing!
I left 25 years of a career in HR behind to become a Personal Trainer for peri and post-menopausal women as the stress of corporate life was something that no longer gave me a buzz but actually drained me. Peri-menopause led me to a new career at 50 years old that feels exactly where I’m meant to be!
