Let’s talk about Joint pain ladies!

In the human body, it is to be believed that we have approximately 360 joints. These joints will suffer wear and tear over the years particularly for joints that have experienced an excessive amount of injury, or arthritis. Therefore, we need to look after our joints, especially through the pausal years.

Perimenopause

Women hitting the perimenopause can experience joint pain, commonly in the back, legs and hips.

Menopause

It is common for pain to progress to the joints in the hands, knees and shoulders, and pain to increase in the back and hips during the stages of menopause.

So, let's discuss what happens when we have painful joints during the pausal journey and how we may help reduce these with the use of Complementary therapies.

The beauty of using Complementary therapies is that with guidance, it is safe to incorporate them alongside mainstream medicine.

Signs of joint pain Swelling, stiffness and warmth in the joint may develop. What causes joint pain during the Pausal Journey, the body’s natural anti-inflammatory agent for joints (oestrogen) decreases which can lead to joint pain. Progesterone can also be associated with joint pain. Another reason for joint pain may be an increase in the cortisol hormone which is caused by stress. Trying to reduce your stress levels can reduce inflammation brought on by high cortisol levels.

Note- Consult your GP if you have concerns about the severity of your joint pain.

How can Complementary therapies help?

Massage, Aromatherapy and Reflexology are very effective in helping to alleviate the symptoms discussed above.

In this Blog, I am going to concentrate upon Aromatherapy. I will discuss how massage and reflexology can be used to help joint pain at a later date. I am in favour that if you have anything lying around at home that you can safely utilise to support your symptom management, use it.

Marjoram essential oil 3 drops
Lavender essential oil 2 drops
Lemon essential oil 2 drops

This recipe can be blended for immediate use, or keep it refrigerated for when you need to apply it.
